Working in Fashion: Trunk Club Mod Affair

Working in Fashion: Trunk Club

Landing one of the highly coveted jobs in fashion in New York City is a dream for many, but what happens after you’re hired? What is working in fashion in New York City really like? In this series, we will be talking with the women and men of fashion to get an insider look at these highly sought after positions.

To start, we sat down with Trunk Club Stylist, Alexandra Mulligan, to get the scoop. Alexandra gave us a tour of the incredible Mansion on Madison (see the gallery below!) and then we began our appointment (Ally will be styling my good friend Brian).

Trunk Club’s New York City club house is located on 51st and Madison in the Mansion on Madison, right next to the Lotte New York Palace (talk about an amazing location!). As soon as Brian and I walked in we could tell we were in for a extremely luxurious day of shopping! The Mansion has a great atmosphere and old world charm. First, Brian and I checked in with the front desk. While we waited for Ally we walked into the fully stocked (complimentary) bar on the main floor. After grabbing a glass of champagne (Brian ordered a beer!), Ally arrived to greet us and take us on a tour of each room in the Mansion before we began our appointment. With a total of three floors, the Mansion is sprawling with style! Each room is unique and dedicated to a different designer, some of the names include John Varvatos, Theory, Gant, DL1961, Vince and more. Ally informed us that each designer actually came in and created the interior design of the room to reflect their brand, John Varvatos was definitely my favorite!

After the tour of the Mansion, Ally took us into the John Varvatos room for Brian’s appointment. Ally asked Brian some questions to get to know his style and what pieces he was looking to add to his wardrobe. We sipped our drinks while Ally grabbed pieces from the stock room that would work for Brian. While Brian tried on all of the different items Ally chose for him, I was able to ask Ally some questions about her role as a Stylist at Trunk Club.

What is Trunk Club?

Trunk Club is a men’s personal styling service. There are three parts to our business: our trunks (for those in hard to reach places), our in house shopping appointments, and our custom clothing. Luckily we have most of the major cities covered with our clubhouses: New York, Chicago, DC, Dallas and LA.

What kind of clients do you work with?

We started with men’s but we’re moving into women’s now which is a whole new ball game! A fun one! Most of our clients don’t have the time to shop or simply just hate doing it.

What is a typical day like at the Mansion?

Well, I come into the our office on Park and 50th where I get to chat with new clients and pack trunks for those who aren’t in the New York area. Then if I have a shopping appointment I come to the clubhouse where clients get to sit back, relax…grab a free drink and do some shopping! And sometimes we all go ice skating like we did today! So, basically I’m meeting new people and shopping everyday!

What is your favorite part about your job?

My favorite part about the job is the people I work with. Everyone is so supportive and not to mention hilarious…and I guess the whole shopping part too!

How did you get into your current position?

I moved to New York with no job, no prospects…nothing. I wanted to go into TV production and there was a time when I had seven different jobs. When I finally found myself with one steady position it was the usual: there was no more challenge and not enough pay so, I finally found time to come in for an interview and here I am!

What’s your favorite look to style the guys in?

My favorite looks are the ones that challenge me. So, maybe our not so typical client that wants to be more trendy and has a more Brooklyn style…wants to stand out. I love those looks.

What is the hardest part about your job?

The hardest part is getting to know each client…some people just want what they need, instant gratification. Which is totally fine, I’m just more personable. And also getting feedback from clients is hard. We can’t do our trunk business without feedback, it’s impossible!

How often do you have repeat clients come in?

We have repeat clients all the time! In our trunk business and in our in house appointments. That’s the best part; building up their wardrobe’s time after time and getting to know them better each time we see them or talk to them.

How does the service differ for clients that can’t come into the mansion versus the clients the come in for an appointment with you?

So, our trunk business is initially a trial and error process. It takes time for shipping, feedback, and then sending a new trunk to fill in what we missed! When people come into the clubhouse we get to give them an experience, which I love! In house is still a little trial and error but in a shorter time period. The client also gets to leave with the clothing that day, just like a normal store…but better!

Ally worked with Brian for about two hours to give him a personalized experience and create the best looks for his needs. After the appointment concluded Brian checked out and Ally wrapped up some of his items to take with him, while the rest would be delivered free of charge. Finally, Brian, Ally, and I headed back down to the bar to wrap up our time at the Mansion!

To make an appointment with Alexandra send her an email at amulligan@trunkclub.com or visit www.trunkclub.com/amulligan

As Trunk Club expands into women’s clothing the Mansion will definitely be busy and you can always work with Ally using the Trunk Club App or online. We would love to hear your thoughts on Trunk Club!
